EXPLORE THE NATURE, VILLAGES AND ETHNIC GROUPS OF NORTHERN LAOS BY FOOT WITH KHAM, A LOCAL GUIDE.

We offer multi-days tour in Northern Laos for trekking and also combines with a private car tour

MY NAME IS KHAMHAK

Since my teenage years, I have been trekking around Laos as a tour guide for over 8 years. Born in an ethnic minority village, I speak several languages. Additionally, I attended college, so I am fluent in English as well. I live with my wife and kids close to Oudomxay but have worked for years in Phongsaly and Muang Khua too, giving me extensive knowledge of northern Laos. Take a look at the tours on offer on this page, but feel free to call me or send a message to discuss your travel details and wishes!

TREKKING IN MUANG XAY/MUANG XAI, OUDOMXAY PROVINCE

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 days trekking/hiking in Muang Xai/Muang Xay, Oudomxay province, Northern Laos.

Muang Xay is nestled in the heart of Laos and easily accessible from all major towns. Just outside the town, a beautiful and unexplored part of Laos awaits you. Our journey together can span from 2 to 8 days, depending on your preference.

We offer:

  • Hiking to visit Khmu Ethnic Villages in remote areas. You will experience their basic local lifestyle, enjoy traditional local food, and spend the night with a local family in a simple wooden house (with basic blankets and mattresses). During the trek, you will also visit the huge cave.
  • Camping on the top of a mountain with the best viewpoint (about 1,000 meters above sea level). It offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. This place is perfect for watching the sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the evening, especially when the weather is clear. If you book this tour, all camping gear including tents, blankets, drinking water, and local food will be arranged by Heart of Lao Travel Company.
  • Survival trek in the forest – Overview:
The survival trek in the forest is a unique and exciting experience that you may have never had before. There are no any tour agencies offering this kind of activity in Laos. This trek is quite challenging and involves difficult jungle trekking as you explore the beautiful forest. You will walk up and down mountains through the forest and jungle, cross rivers, and travel along riverbanks.
During the trek, you will learn important survival skills such as finding natural food, collecting vegetables from the forest, and catching fish, frogs, and crabs. You will also learn how to set traps to catch mice and how to build small camps using banana leaves/tents. In addition, you will learn how to cook food in bamboo, drink boiled water or natural tea, and make bamboo cups for drinking water. You will spend the night sleeping in the jungle.
On this trek, you can see and hear the beautiful sounds of animals and birds. In the morning when you wake up, you may hear squirrels and chipmunks singing, and you can also hear them again in the evening before it gets dark.
One of the best parts of this trekking experience is that it teaches you how to survive in the jungle when you go trekking by yourself.
  • Activity tour (Depends on the farming season) is also organised for people who need farming experiences with local people for travelers seeking an authentic connection with rural life, we offer activity tours that immerse you in the daily farming practices of local communities. Participants will have the unique opportunity to work side by side with local farmers, learning traditional techniques such as planting and harvesting rice or corn, tending vegetable gardens, and collecting firewood for cooking.
These tours provide not only hands-on experience but also a deep understanding of local culture, customs, and sustainable farming practices. Visitors can witness how families manage their farms, participate in seasonal activities, and gain insight into the rhythms of rural life that have been passed down for generations.
Whether you are curious about traditional agricultural methods, eager to try your hand at farm work, or simply want to experience the tranquility of the countryside, our activity tours offer a meaningful and memorable journey into the heart of local life.

Please note that the treks vary in difficulty, so be sure to explore the available options.

PRIVATE CAR TOURS IN NORTHERN LAOS

1,2,3,4,5,6,7 days tour to explore minority remote villages in Northern Laos by a private car/Minivan.

We also organize comfortable road trips with an experienced driver for travelers who prefer not to join a multi-day trekking tour. These journeys usually last between 3 and 5 days and begin in Muang Xay, the capital of Oudomxay Province, which is easily accessible from many major towns in Laos.
This road trip is a wonderful opportunity to explore the remote mountains, scenic landscapes, and diverse cultures of northern Laos while traveling at a relaxed pace. Along the way, you will pass through beautiful valleys, forested hills, traditional villages, and local markets that reflect the authentic lifestyle of the region.
The tour can also be organized as a one-way journey from Muang Xay to Phongsaly, one of the most remote and culturally rich provinces in Laos. From Phongsaly, travelers can continue their journey onward to Vietnam, making this trip a unique cross-border adventure through some of the least explored areas of Southeast Asia.
During the journey, you will have the opportunity to visit and learn about many ethnic communities that live in northern Laos. In particular, you will meet several sub-groups of the Akha people, each with their own traditional clothing, customs, and village life. These include Akha Pala, Akha Er-pa, Akha Yar Er, Akha Mouchee, Akha Cherpia, Akha Pixor (Pouxor), Akha Poulee, Akha Oma, and Akha Noukouy.
In addition to the Akha communities, the tour also offers to visit with other ethnic groups such as the Pounoy, Hmong, Hor (Chinese communities living in Laos), Khmu, Tai Lue, and Tai Dam. Each group has its own unique traditions, languages, and cultural practices that have been preserved for generations.
Visitors will gain insight into traditional village life, including local farming practices, handicrafts, architecture, and cultural traditions. Depending on the time of year, you may also witness seasonal activities such as rice farming, tea cultivation, local markets, or traditional ceremonies.
This road trip is ideal for travelers who wish to experience the cultural diversity and natural beauty of northern Laos without the physical demands of trekking, while still enjoying meaningful interactions with local communities.

TREKKING IN BUONTAI (PHONGSALY PROVINCE)

Buontai is in the middle part of Phongsaly Province, Northern Laos and is the most remote but most beautiful province in the country. It has  forests, and mountain rice and cardamom fields. The trips offered here are for the more adventurous, but they are definitely very rewarding as some parts remain relatively untouched.

TREKKING IN PHONGSALY ( Phongsaly Province)

Phongsaly is tucked away in the northeast of Laos and is one of the most beautiful provinces in the country. It is also one of the most remote areas, with authentic hill tribe villages where many local people, especially women, still wear their beautiful traditional clothes.
The province has lakes, forests, mountain rice fields, and cardamom plantations, as well as amazing landscapes and viewpoints. In the morning, the mountains are often covered by a sea of clouds, and in the evening you can enjoy incredible sunsets before night falls.
The trips offered here are for more adventurous travelers, but they are definitely very rewarding, as some parts of the area remain relatively untouched.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

Please be aware that in some instances, sanitary facilities may be limited. Feel free to consult your guide for more information specific to your trek.

SUPPORT THE LOCALS!

Some of the villages we will visit and stay in may be economically challenged. They would deeply appreciate a gift. This could include pens, pencils, and paper for the students. Another excellent option is sports equipment for the children or soap and vegetable seeds. In certain villages, locals sell indigo products, which also greatly supports them.

CUSTOMS & HYGIENE

Some of the villages we will visit are located in remote areas. The residents in these areas typically do not have toilets and take showers in open public spaces.

The customs of some of the tribes we visit are different than in the city. Always heed the recommendations of your guide, as customs can vary among different ethnic groups.
